No Viable Alternative to Peace?

This, on the same day that Israeli fighter jets swept over the Gaza Strip, destroying two rocket storage facilities, and as the Gazans were pouring mortar and rocket fire into Israel  As always, it was the Gazan firebrands who shot first.  It is increasingly clear to both sides that peace must be had ASAP, and they are beginning to sell this to their respective peoples.  At the same time, Mitchell has been to Syria, to include Bashar al Assad in this peace deal.  Assad is working through Turkey as their primary go-between, but the U.S. presence there underscores the broader scope of these negotiations.  The Arab League signed off on them several weeks ago.  Things have never progressed this far, even under Clinton.  There has never been the sense that there is no viable alternative to peace.  This is new.
